Life will always have its ups and downs, and even in the best times, maintaining wellbeing requires intentional effort. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have lost access to our go-to tools and behaviors. Although we can’t merely wish the pandemic away, we can still find new ways to avoid stress and ignite moments of meaning and joy within our day.
With all the stress that’s affecting each one of us, we now more than ever must take proactive steps to lift ourselves so we can better lift each other. Here are 6 ways on how to avoid stress and add little joys in life.
Practice Self-Care
When it comes to self-care, most of us tend to put ourselves last. We focus on the needs of those around us first and allow our own needs to go by the wayside. We forget that to take care of others, you must first take care of ourselves. Practicing self-care will help us in maintaining our physical, emotional, and mental reserves to avoid and manage stress.
Stay Connected with Family and Friends
Connection with other humans is possibly the number one remedy to avoid stress. During this time of social distancing, stress, anxiety, and even depression might start to get the best of us. If it happens to you, know that it’s normal, especially under uncontrolled situations. That’s why it’s so important to keep in touch, particularly during these uncertain times.
Adopt a Pet
Adopting a pet can alleviate some of the stress in life. Imagine coming home from a hard day’s work and being greeted by someone who is genuinely so happy to see you. That’s how it is when you adopt a pet. Bonding with them has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression in some people. It can also lower blood pressure, improve cognitive abilities, relieve loneliness, reduce negativity, and boost self-confidence.
During the lockdown, I finally decided to adopt a pet, and it helped me cope up in so many ways! My cat, Momo, is indeed a good companion. His purring is one of the most comforting sounds in the world!
Start a New Hobby
Stress is a natural part of life. We all experience it from time to time. If you feel overwhelmed by all the work you have to do, starting a new hobby will help you avoid stress and recharge yourself. Maybe you can try planting, writing, or anything art-related such as drawing and painting. It can help you prevent stress and reduce your risk of health problems associated with stress.
Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep may seem easier said than done. We are always on the go, and between work and our personal lives, rest sometimes doesn’t seem to fit. Sleep not only impacts how tired and alert we feel, but it also affects our entire body. When we don’t get enough sleep, chances are, our mental functions are reduced, and our body begins to wear down. So it’s essential to have seven to eight hours of sleep every night to function at our best.
Maintain Healthy Nutrition
What we put into our bodies will have the most significant impact on our overall health. In order to avoid stress and be happier, we must take care of our nutrition. To maintain a healthy, nutritious diet, we should focus on whole foods and limiting the number of processed foods we consume. This means consuming all-natural foods, or as close to nature as possible, and removing processed carbs, excess sugar, and all artificial ingredients from your diet.
If you are coming off a processed diet, introducing a supplement like Detox Organics Daily Superfoods into your daily routine will help a lot. It is made up of more than 25 raw, organic superfoods that have been scientifically proven to lower inflammation, support your body’s detoxing system, and provide you with more energy.
If you have not been eating a healthy lifestyle, chances are you’ve built up chronic inflammation in your body, and this inflammation can cause fatigue, bloat, and digestive issues. When you begin to clean up your nutrition, start by cleaning up your system. Plus, this supplement is so good, it tastes like chocolate, making it the perfect snack to cut those sweet cravings as you remove sugar from your diet!

Hello Nicole. I truly agree with everything on your list. What inspired me the most was your saying that to be able to care for others, we must take care of ourselves first.
Currently, I’m back to my writing. I’ve been cooking a lot too to release my stress and creativity. And yes, we have four dogs and two cats at home. It’s a riot but they make life happier. Agree? 🙂
I have yet to apply good nutrition and enough sleep. 😊

We can’t have a pet here, but in its place, we got plants. and yes, I agree with all of these on your list, especially good nutrition. it really does contribute to our mental and emotional wellbeing more than we think it does.

I loved how you used “intentional effort” in taking care of our wellbeing during this pandemic. I agree with all of the points you mentioned and tips you gave. I would love a cat tho and I’ve been wanting one since forever. I feel like it would be the best things in the world!

Personally, self care and adopting a pet talaga. Iba nagagawa nila na pampawala ng stress no? Lalo na ngayon, we really need to take care yung mental health natin..

I find this really helpful! Thank you so much for sharing this. I know getting enough sleep is really important but I seldom get it HAHAHAHA

Hi! Omg namesake pala kita hehehe! Anyway on to your list! The easiest way to not gove youself the proper care it deserves is by not sleeeping or eating properly. I Should know, I am in that situation. But this is a great reminder to take a breather, it is just that pag nanay ka na ang hirap maghanap ng time for that hahahha

You do always have a nice list there. Since I’m into a whole different WFH setup I got to figure out what perfect routine I should have which keeps me stick on the old way. Keeping myself healthy is my top prio, I always do exercise at the start of the day always. And I think a part of that is self-care, emotionally, mentally and physically.

Yessss to all of these. One thing from your list that i neednl to do though is to get enough sleep. I should consciously do that.
