Today, October 8, 2020, Fujifilm officially launched its newest square format instant film camera — Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1. The launching event reminds me that with everything that is happening today, we need to learn how to appreciate the things around us and find more ways to express our creativity. While the things we’d normally do have become limited, it also opens up new avenues for us to explore. With the new Instax SQUARE SQ1, there’s definitely more of our world to capture in a square and more to do even when going back to square one.
The Instax Square SQ1 is an analog, square camera that creates square format instant prints at 1.5 times the size of its Instax mini counterpart. It introduces a minimalist, user-friendly square camera body design and key features. Fujifilm made it simple and easy to use, without compromising the quality of the image it produces. It’s a perfect middle ground between the Instax Mini and Instax Wide. According to Geremy So, Senior Marketing Leader for instax, it’s perfect for both beginners and experienced film users.
Simple Operation: Shooting with the Instax Square SQ1 is incredibly straightforward. You don’t have to tinker with a lot of modes, and the body is light and easy to hold. There are only three settings you can control — twisting the lens will turn the camera on, twisting it once more will put it in selfie mode, and twist it back to the top to turn it off. On the back, a small window on the bottom right lets you know how many shots remain in your film pack, just like any other Fujifilm Instax cameras.
Square format: The Square format gives you limitless creativity with the freedom and form of a wider frame.
Auto Exposure: You can capture bright photos even in dark spaces – no special settings needed. This function automatically senses the level of ambient light when the shutter button is pressed and optimizes the shutter speed and flash output according to lighting conditions. It allows even those who are new to instant photography to take photos that are automatically properly exposed regardless of conditions, producing clearer and more vibrant instant prints on the spot.
Selfie Mode: Get clear selfies with Selfie mode! Just position yourself in the selfie mirror for the best shot! Along with its built-in selfie mirror, instax SQ1’s Selfie mode is also designed for close-up shots or macro shots with a range of 30-50cm.
The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1 is available in 3 colors: Chalk White, Terracotta Orange, and Glacier Blue

As an Instax fan, SQ1 combines everything that I love about the mini’s cool, modern style and functionality with the larger, vibrant output of the square film. Here’s an unboxing video of the Instax SQ1 in Glacier Blue
